Backing

The driver will be directed to go to the curb for the backing up segment. In the BACKING section of the DPE sheet (see left), "E" is for entering traffic FROM the curb, "X" is for exiting traffic TO the curb, and "B" is for the backing up process.
You must look over your shoulder while backing up. Mirror use is not allowed, unless your vehicle has no rear window, or if for medical reasons, you cannot turn your head.

As in driving forward, do NOT look down at the curb by your trunk lid; look back at least 50-100 feet, and steer towards where you are looking.

"TRAFFIC CHECK: When entering and exiting, driver is observing traffic ahead, to the right and left, and to the rear. Indicated by head and/or eye movement and use of mirrors; checks appropriate blind spot; looks toward other drivers and pedestrians as necessary; reacts safely to traffic situations.
SIGNAL: Activates signal prior to entering/exiting traffic; cancels signal after entering/exiting traffic.
SPEED: Enters and exits traffic at a safe speed and in control of the vehicle. (NOTE: many examiners will say to go at "walking speed", which is basically at idle. Don't accelerate unless needed!)
PARALLEL/CONTROL: Vehicle is parallel to, and within 18 inches of curb, without hitting the curb; does not block driveway, fire hydrant, etc.; when backing, remains parallel, with no more than one corrective movement, for a distance of 60 feet.
